Jack Royle

Omule : Hi Jack, can you tell me how everything started?
Jack : I have always been drawing since I was old enough to pick up a pencil, I’ve just always done it. I carried on doing Art all the way through school, then I did product design at University. From that, I fell in love with graphic design and illustration and haven’t looked back since.
Omule : What is like to be an illustrator? Where do you get your inspiration from?
Jack : Being an illustrator is great, never have I had so much job satisfaction, I don’t really see it as a job, it’s a hobby that I am able to do full time. I get inspiration from anything, like literally anything.
Omule : Can you remember some of your earliest influences?
Jack : In art class, I always was inspired by Roy Lichenstein and of course Andy Warhol. Anything pop art I was a fan of.
Omule : What is your ideal creative environment?
Jack : Probably either anywhere outdoors or at home in front of the TV, not exactly professional, but it works for me.
Omule : How is your process ? Do you have any kind of creative patterns and routines?
Jack : I don’t really have a pattern, I am a firm believer in just getting stuck into things and see how they go. I have techniques that I have picked up that bring results but with anything creative, there is no step by step guide. Knowing your client and end goal inside out is always the first step, the rest should just follow naturally after that.
Omule : What do you like the most about your work?
Jack : I like that fact that I can create work that is literally an illustration of the object I am focusing on and even make it look completely different if I want to, with design there is no right or wrong. Apart from using Comic Sans, that’s always wrong,
Omule : What kind of tools do you use?
Jack : I use all the Adobe suite, mostly Illustrator for anything illusion based, photoshop for touching up photos and InDesign for any publication work.
Omule : Do you have a favourite place to go on a holiday?
Jack : Anywhere all my mates are going, we do it every year with about 20 of us, always a great time.
Omule : Tell me five things you can’t live without.
Jack : My MacBook, my phone, my DJ equipment, my friends and the person who keeps me motivated, my girlfriend.
Omule : What’s your favorite food?
Jack : All the food. I’m quite a greedy guy.
Omule : Who is on the guest list for your ideal dinner party?
Jack : Ooooo good question. Joe Rogan, J Dilla, Madlib, Pewdiepie and Snoop Dogg to get the conversation flowing.
Omule : Do you have favorite documentaries, movies, or podcasts?
Jack : I constantly listen to Joe Rogan podcast, really interesting guest and some amazing topics are covered. Documentaries, I have been getting into the crime ones Netflix are bringing out, they are really interesting, also ones about space just blows my mind every time. Filmwise, I love anything that’s funny and childhood films are always a good go to.
Omule : What superpower would you like to have and why?
Jack : I would like the power to freeze time as there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done.
Omule : If you had the power, what would you forbid?
Jack : Probably forbid doing it more than once a week otherwise I would probably use it for everything.
Omule : Would you say that keeping things simple is your strongest skill?
Jack : Yeah, I would say so, I’m quite a simple-minded guy so it works well for me.
Omule : What would be a great achievement for you?
Jack : The greatest achievement for me would be being able to teach a design class or 2 and see people progressing based on the guidance I had taught them.
Omule : I know you are a dj . What is your favorite kind of music?
Jack : Day to day I listen at a lot of hip hop, no mumble rap stuff. Mostly 90’s and lyrical stuff. And when it comes to playing on the decks, I play house and techno music.
Omule : Do you like music festivals? Do you have any favorites?
Jack : I sure do, Sonar festival, outlook festival, Tramlines festival, Under the valley festival, and of course Boomtown festival which I need to go to, I’ve heard some crazy things.
